The great debate over whether Birmingham Airport should or should not have it's runway extension, will always cause discussions in the pub or over garden wall. The pro's and con's will be debated in many a meeting at the council house before the final decision is made.
From the man in the street to the high powered democratically elected representatives, who we decided, would make these decisions for us within the walls of the council house, would have to agree, that any projects that secures the future not only for us but for our children must be considered carefully.
With the current climate of firms struggling to survive and the day to day announcements that yet another company has had to shed hundreds of loyal staff who have been with them for years, you have to honestly consider the balance between the future prosperity of the region or continue the struggle to maintain our competitiveness against forward looking authorities such as, I hate to say as a loyal Brummie, Manchester. Manchester, at the time they built it, possibly did not need their second runway, but have built it anyway. Airlines considering operating from regional airports, will look at this decision as proactive on the part of the airport in planning for the future and would seriously include this in the decision to operate from there or not.
Even the local enviromentalists protests, which have to be considered, have to agree, the influx of additional business generated by any extension would without doubt, contribute to the future prosperity of the local region, not only financialy, but secure the future growth of local businesses who will be able to compete easier and better in world markets.
The airlines, playing their part, continually look at using quieter, more enviromentally friendly aircraft, as this contributes to their future prosperity with the use of less fuel. This then results in the general public been given the opportunity of cheaper air fares.
Those who protest about airport development, probably use the airport when they go on their annual holiday, and will be the first to complain if they can't get a flight to their chosen destination from their local airport. Then they have to drive miles to another airport before they can start their holiday adding to the air polution by using their car to get there.
Locally, the development would generate hundreds of jobs securing the future for those families, who, let's face it, deserve something better than what we are going through at present, with very poor prospects, and nothing good to look forward to in the near future.
I will leave it to everyones personnal circumstances to make their own minds up on this subject.
If the decision is to reject the proposal, then at the end of the day, it will be on the heads of those who have decided that in their infinite wisdom, it is better to continue to struggle than to prosper.
